Why do grooming appointments take so long?
It takes about a hour and a half to groom a dog and my appointment is at 11:00 am, why do I get my dog back at 2:00pm?
We at Lynda's Groom Room do not groom one dog at a time. Dogs are bathed before they are groomed, even if they are going to be cut short. While one dog is cage drying another dog is being washed . It does not make much sense to stand around waiting for a dog to dry when you can stay busy working on another. Blow dryers are a fast way to get a dog dry but not all dogs are fond of the noise and will only tolerate so much before they object.
By the time three or four dogs are bathed the first one is dried and ready to be groomed. You my ask why wash my dog first if you are only going to shave him short. The truth is that by washing and drying your dog first you get a more even and finished look when clipping. It also helps with the time that it takes to clip your dog. Clipping a dirty dog takes more time and force to try to push the clippers through the dirty coat.
Another thing that adds time to the grooming process is if your pet has fleas or ticks. The shampoo that is used to treat for these parasites must stay on for a longer length of time than a normal shampoo. Your dog may not have a flea or tick problem but some times others do and adds extra time to the day.
Most dogs that go to the groomer on a regular basis are use to the process and handle it well but, some of the dogs that are new or less use to the process get nervous and have accidents. We at Lynda's Groom Room like to take the time to make it a not so scary experience for the pets so we slow down and take the time that is necessary to make it a little less scary.
On top of all the above mentioned factors are dogs coming in and dogs going home and phones ringing and questions being answered. So as you can see there is a lot that goes into making your pet look it's best and making it a pleasant experience for him or her.
These are a few reasons why a hour and a half job my take 2 to 3 hours but, be confident in the knowledge that your pet is in the hands of animal loving people and are being treated with love and kindness at Lynda's Groom Room.
P.S. Cats..... They are a whole different story. They are very sensitive creatures that know what they like and what they don't and are willing to let you know it. Cats take even longer because most wont let you blow dry them and it often take 2 people to work on them. So to our cat clients be understanding please.
